SMU Scholarships 2026: How to Get Full Tuition (Hunt & President’s Awards)

December 20, 2025 A low-angle photograph of a smiling young man in a navy suit holding a red Southern Methodist University folder, standing on a lawn in front of the domed Dallas Hall. Large, three-dimensional golden text across the top of the image reads "FULL TUITION PAID".

Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas is one of the most prestigious—and expensive—private universities in the South. But you shouldn’t let the price tag scare you.

SMU offers some of the most generous financial aid packages in the country, including the legendary Hunt Leadership Scholars and President’s Scholars programs.

These aren’t just small discounts; they are massive Full Tuition waivers worth over $250,000 across four years.

Whether you are a straight-A student or a campus leader, here is how you can study at SMU for a fraction of the cost in 2026.

1. The President’s Scholars (The Full Ride)

This is the top academic award at SMU. It is designed for the academic elite.

If selected, you receive Full Tuition and Fees. But the perks don’t stop there. President’s Scholars also get:

  • A paid Study Abroad experience.
  • Access to exclusive specialized retreats.
  • Guaranteed on-campus housing spots.

How to Win:

This is strictly merit-based. You need an incredibly high GPA and rigorous course load (AP/IB classes). Traditionally, you must apply by the November 1 Early Action deadline to be considered.

2. The Hunt Leadership Scholars (Leader’s Choice)

If you are the president of your student council or captain of a varsity team, this is for you.

The Hunt Scholarship covers Full Tuition (minus the cost of standard resident tuition). It is unique because it values leadership just as much as grades.

  • Value: Approx. $60,000+ per year.
  • Requirement: You must submit an additional essay and a YouTube Video Statement.
  • Deadline: You must apply for admission and submit the Hunt essay by January 15, 2026.

3. Automatic Academic Scholarships (No Extra Essay)

For most students, the Second Century Scholars and Provost Scholars awards are the easiest way to get funding.

These are “Automatic Consideration” awards. When you submit your application to SMU, the admissions officer automatically calculates your award based on your grades.

  • Second Century Scholar: $20,000 – $30,000 per year.
  • Red & Blue Scholar: Varied amounts for strong applicants.
  • International Students: YES, international applicants are eligible for these merit awards.1

The “Mustang Scholars” (Dallas Locals)

If you live in Dallas County and have financial need, the Mustang Scholarship is a Full-Ride opportunity.2

It covers tuition and fees for high-achieving local students who demonstrate financial need via the CSS Profile and FAFSA.

How to Apply (Crucial Dates)

The timeline for SMU is aggressive. To have the best chance at the big money, you cannot wait until regular decision.

1. Apply Early Action

Submit your Common App by November 1. This shows SMU they are your top choice and puts you in the priority pool for the President’s Scholar review.

2. Submit the Hunt Essay

After applying for admission, you will get access to your portal. You MUST upload your Hunt Leadership essay and video by January 15.

3. Complete the CSS Profile

Even for merit scholarships, SMU recommends filing the CSS Profile to unlock additional grant money.

International GPA Converter (4.0 Scale)

Estimate your unweighted GPA by selecting the grade value for up to 5 courses. This is for quick reference only.

Note: This is an unweighted estimate. Always use official WES/IEE services for final scholarship applications.

Is SMU Worth It?

With an endowment of over $2 billion, SMU invests heavily in its students. A “Second Century” award alone can cut your tuition in half.

If you combine an automatic merit award with external grants, an SMU degree becomes cheaper than many public state colleges.
