Financial Benefits: Comprehensive Funding for Research
The Vanier CGS is valued at C$50,000 per year for three years of study. This funding is substantial and is intended to cover:
- ✅ Tuition and Fees: The C$50,000 can be used to cover tuition and mandatory university fees.
- ✅ Living Stipend: The remainder of the annual sum acts as a generous stipend for living expenses, accommodation, and personal needs.
- Research Support: Funds are fully flexible, allowing the scholar to allocate money toward research materials or conference travel.
Eligibility Criteria (Who Can Apply?)
The Vanier CGS is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and international students. To be eligible, you must meet the following:
- Academic Standing: Be nominated by only one Canadian university with a Vanier CGS quota.
- Enrollment: Intend to pursue your first doctoral degree (or combined Master’s/PhD) in Canada.
- Time Limit: Must not have completed more than 20 months of full-time study in your doctoral program as of May 1, 2026.
- Previous Funding: Must not hold, or have held, a doctoral-level scholarship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.
- Language: English proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL) is often a prerequisite for your university admission, which is necessary before nomination.
Three Areas of Focus (Research Pillars)
The scholarship supports research across three main areas:
- CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research): Health sciences, including clinical medicine, public health, and basic biomedical sciences.
- NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council): Natural sciences and engineering (STEM fields).
- SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council): Social sciences, humanities, law, business, and education.
How to Apply: The Nomination Process (Critical!)
You cannot apply for the Vanier CGS directly. The process is entirely based on nomination by the Canadian university where you wish to study.
Step 1: Secure University Support
You must first contact the graduate studies office or the specific department at your desired Canadian university. Inform them of your intent to apply for the Vanier CGS and ask about their internal application deadline (which is always much earlier than the national deadline).
Step 2: Submit Internal Application (University Deadline)
The university will have an internal application process (often requiring a research proposal, transcripts, and references). The university will select its top candidates to officially nominate to the federal government.
Step 3: CSC Application (If Nominated)
If nominated by the university, you will then complete the final online application form through the Research Portal platform by the national deadline.
Deadline & Official Link
The typical National Deadline for the Vanier CGS nomination is in early November (e.g., November 5, 2025). However, university internal deadlines are often in September or October 2025 to allow them time to select nominees. Since we are in December 2025, you should look for the 2026-2027 cycle opening soon, or check if any universities have a later internal deadline.
